Oregon Fire Service Members - As you know, the Staffing For Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) is now open for applications and fire service organizations across the United States are developing and submitting their grant requests. The success of the Staffing For Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program for the past ten years was due in no small part to the volunteers that participate in the grant evaluation process. Once again, the United States Fire Administration has asked state fire training agencies to provide volunteer evaluators to review and score the grant applications. The week for evaluations has tentatively been scheduled for March 18-23rd, 2012. The names of all interested representatives will be sent to the USFA for consideration and selected through a random process. Please remember hundreds of names are submitted to ensure that all of the nation’s fire service organizations are represented – just because a name is submitted does not mean they will be selected. Individuals volunteering to serve as evaluators should plan on traveling the day before the evaluation period and returning home the afternoon of the last day of the evaluation period. The names of all evaluators from across the nation are randomly selected. For those selected to participate, travel costs will be reimbursed, and food and lodging will be provided by FEMA. FEMA’s support contractor will contact selected participants to discuss the necessary travel arrangements and reimbursement if a privately owned vehicle is being used. No salary is authorized for personnel volunteering to evaluate the SAFER grant applications. Please be aware, for planning purposes, volunteer evaluators will be scheduled for the entire week. Grants management procedures prohibit interchanging evaluators during the week. Those interested should have a broad knowledge in a variety of areas of the fire and emergency medical service, since they will be reviewing applications from fire-rescue agencies throughout the United States. This will help maintain the integrity of a “peer review” approach. In order to move forward please provide me with the following information for each volunteer evaluator. Name Organizational name and position or title Type of organization (career, combination, volunteer) Mailing address Day and evening telephone numbers Email address Please send your information directly to me (Eriks Gabliks) by the close of business on February 20, 2012.
